MANHATTAN — Former Kansas State basketball coach Jerome Tang has responded to reports saying that the university is attempting to fire him for cause.

Kansas State announced Tang's firing on Sunday, Feb. 15. The coach would be due $18.675 million if he was fired without cause.

Tang released a statement through ESPN's Pete Thamel, saying that he will fight Kansas State's plans to fire him for cause.

"I am deeply disappointed with the university's decision and strongly disagree with the characterization of my termination," Tang said in Thamel's report. "I have always acted with integrity and faithfully fulfilled my responsibilities as head coach.

"I would like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the opportunity to serve as head coach at Kansas State. It has been one of the great honors of my life.

"I am grateful to the players, staff, and fans who make this program so special. I remain proud of what we built together and confident that I have always acted in the best interests of the university and our student-athletes."

Kansas State officially announced Tang's firing, with the K-State athletic director citing Tang's "recent comments and conduct." Those comments were in reference to Tang's viral postgame press conference that followed the Wildcats' 91-62 loss to Cincinnati on Feb. 11.

"This was embarrassing," Tang said on Wednesday. "These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform, and there will be very few of them in it next year. I'm embarrassed for the university, I'm embarrassed for our fans, and our student section. It's just ridiculous."
