Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love suffered an ankle injury in the team's 27-14 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. Head coach Mike LaFleur originally said that it was minor and was nothing to worry about.
However, it is a little worse than originally believed, and he will miss some time.
LaFleur told reporters on Saturday Love came in on Friday "a little more sore than he left," and that he will be held out of practice and the Cardinals' next preseason game, next Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
"We'll keep him out this week, as we just let it heal," he said.
LaFleur would not put a timeline on Love's recovery, but said they would reevaluate after this next week. When asked about the regular-season opener on Sept. 13, LaFleur simply said he was focused on the practice scheduled for the day. He wouldn't say that Love would for sure return by Week 1.
Love played 24 snaps and had 14 touches on Thursday in the game against the Raiders. He had 11 rushes for 58 yards and caught three passes for 14.
Love being out for next week's game basically means he is done for the preseason. Starters almost never play in preseason finales, so his last game action would have been against the Cowboys.
The real key is whether or not he is back on the field for the joint practice the Cardinals have with the Green Bay Packers before their preseason finale.
