ESPN baseball reporter Jeff Passan posted a story Aug. 7 that reported more details about the Los Angeles Dodgers trade for Tarik Skubal, digging into the play-by-play of Detroit's decision to make the move Aug. 1 and calling teams for their best and final offer.
Brewers fans looking for a new revelation probably won't find much. Passan echoed previous reporting from Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that the Milwaukee Brewers' offer included Brewers No. 2 prospect Luis Peña and two other players (McCalvy previously reported that all three players were hitters and two were top-100 prospects), while big-leaguers Logan Henderson, Cooper Pratt, Luis Lara and No. 1 prospect Jesús Made were all off-limits.
Under that framework, the two likeliest candidates to be the other top-100 prospect in the deal are infielder Jett Williams and outfielder Josh Adamczewski.
The Tigers weren't necessarily demanding a controllable starting pitcher or any particular position. But, responding to anxiety that pitchers with multiple years of team control would become bigger-ticket items closer to the deadline, they decided to act Aug. 1 (two days before the deadline) and ask teams for their best and final offer, with no back-and-forth or haggling over the details.
The Detroit brain trust then met and debated the offers before picking a favorite.
As Brewers fans know, the Dodgers package of outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander Brady Smith and right-hander River Ryan won the day. Ryan is the most interesting part of the deal, a top-flight prospect who also has an injury history and will turn 28 years old in mid-August, and Passan goes deeper into Ryan as the "fulcrum" of the deal.
"Pair the rotation and outfield with an infield that includes a rookie All-Star shortstop in [Kevin] McGonigle, an All-Star catcher in his prime in [Dillon] Dingler and a near-big-league-ready group (Josue Briceño at first base, former first-rounder Bryce Rainer in the middle infield and Max Anderson at second or third) and it becomes easier to understand the appeal of the Dodgers' package. Multiple executives involved in the discussions acknowledged that even if they believed theirs was superior, a reasonable person could understand why Detroit preferred Los Angeles'. The players aren't just good. They fit Detroit's needs."
Passan notes that the Dodgers have an unseen advantage at the trade deadline, less reliant on their prospects to become big-league regulars than other franchises.
"This, as much as anything, is the consequence of the game's payroll gap: It forces teams that do almost everything right, such as the Brewers and Rays, to spend their existence considering whether really, really trying to win is worth it. The answer, almost always, is no. And regardless of whether that's right or wrong, it's the existence the Brewers will carry into October, when they'll march out [Jacob] Misiorowski, [Dustin] May and Kyle Harrison and hope it's enough to topple a juggernaut that once again owned the trade deadline."
