Jedd Fisch is never shy about discussing Washington's financial situation as it pertains to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), and was quick to bring it up during his time at the podium during Big Ten Media Days on Thursday.
"I've certainly seen the speculation about what is spent on our roster, and I can tell you that's not even close," Fisch said, referencing a projection by College Front Office which valued Washington's roster at $28 million for the 2026 season.
"This team was not bought; this team was built. This team was built from 18, 19, and 20-year-olds. We were the only team in the Big Ten that started an offensive lineman for ten games who was a true freshman who became a Freshman All-American."
Throughout his tenure at Washington, Fisch has been consistent in his urge to increase Washington's NIL funding to retain players like his trio of Freshman All-Americans in offensive lineman John Mills, safety Rylon Dillard-Allen, and wide receiver Dezmen Roebuck. That message didn't change in Chicago.
"We're not close to where we need to be if we want to have consistent success on the national stage in the top 20-25 programs," Fisch told KJR's Dave Mahler. "I don't think anyone wants to be in the 30s and 40's when it comes to NIL. We need more."
The Huskies have placed a heavy emphasis on high school recruiting under Fisch, something that doesn't come cheap after bringing in the No. 13-ranked class in the 2026 cycle, according to 247Sports, and Fisch has continued to push those players onto the field early in their careers, rewarding those who can produce with significant financial commitments.
After the Huskies re-signed 61 players following the 2025 season, it's clear they're standing on solid ground in terms of NIL, but in order to compete in the Big Ten, which has taken home the last three national championships, Washington will need to continue to see a cash influx to acquire and retain elite talent.
