When the Boston Celtics take to the court against the Orlando Magic on Sunday, April 20, Jayson Tatum will be lining up across from Paolo Banchero. Tatum has become somewhat of a mentor to Banchero, with the duo both passing through Duke en route to the NBA.
Tatum is an NBA champion, a three (soon to be four) All-NBA first team selection, and a multi-time All-Star. Banchero has chosen wisely in terms of someone that he's trying to emulate. However, when he was speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 16, Banchero confirmed that he won't hold back when facing off against Tatum.
Instead, the Magic's star forward believes the best way to show his respect is to go right at Boston's superstar. As such, we should expect a physical battle between the two forwards, which will hopefully bring the best out of both players.
Tatum has sat out two of the three meetings between Boston and Orlando this season. Therefore, there is little data on how he and Banchero have fared when going head-to-head this season. However, with a full playoff series ahead, that data will quickly populate as both forwards project to eat significant minutes on a game-to-game basis.
Boston has lost six of its last 10 meetings with Orlando. As such, Mazzulla's team must set the record straight. After all, the Celtics are the defending champions, and they have their eyes on a repeat performance.

“I’ve known Jayson since I was going into college,” Banchero said, via Masslive. “I see him every summer. A guy that I’m very familiar with. One of the guys I go to for advice and stuff like that. Obviously, now, we’re competing. The best way for me to show my respect is to give him my best effort and go at him as much as I can. I’m excited for the matchup and I’m just excited to be in the playoffs in general.”
