The Denver Broncos welcomed media members to their third and final practice of the first week of organized team activities (OTAs) on Thursday, giving reporters their first look at new wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Denver traded multiple draft picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Waddle earlier this year, and the 27-year-old receiver's quickness was on full display during Thursday's session. Fellow receiver Courtland Sutton noted Waddle's “tremendous speed," and coach Sean Payton said the veteran has also picked up the offense quickly.
“He’s had a good week," Payton said. "He’s someone who picks things up real quick. He had a real good day yesterday. You can just feel his instincts, his quickness and his ability to really to not only run fast but stop fast. So he’s doing well.”
Waddle will add an instant spark to Denver's offense, teaming up with Sutton to give quarterback Bo Nix another dynamic weapon.
"[H]e’s a special dude," Sutton said of Waddle. "There are a lot of things that he has — the qualities that he does that are very unique to himself. I say that in a very specific way because he has some qualities that only he can do. It’s fun to be able to see it up close and personal. I think Coach [Davis] Webb and Coach Payton have done a really good job already of trying to figure out the things that he can do well to help us in our room and help our offense.”
After hauling in 64 receptions for 910 yards and six touchdowns in Miami last season, Waddle will look to take the next step in Denver, and he's off to a good start.
