The Dallas Cowboys have grabbed their running back weapon, taking a somewhat local kid in the fifth round. Texas' Jaydon Blue hails from Houston and attended the University of Texas, so it's not too far of a journey for him to make his way to his new home. The hope for Blue and his supporters, is that he's not just going to be moving to Frisco for work purposes, but also moving into the RB1 line on the Cowboys' depth chart.
The competition is wide open. While Miles Sanders, signed as a free agent, has been a lead running back before, he hasn't been that in some years. His 2022 campaign is the only one among the seven backs now on the roster where a runner had over 250 carries. Javonte Williams has two years between 200 and 220 jaunts, but doesn't have 200 total carries combined in his other two seasons. In other words, despite being seen as a change-of-pace back, Blue has an opportunity to command the important touches out of the Cowboys' backfield, even if it's not the lion's share.
Blue has only spent one season as a major cog in the Longhorns' offense. This past year he more than doubled his carries from 65 to 134 and tripled his receptions from 14 to 42. Thankfully, with everything that's known about the traits that carry over from college to the pros, his explosiveness is the most important thing and the fact there hasn't been a ton of wear and tear on him is actually a good thing.
That sentiment is echoed in the film that's been collected on Blue. His highlight video is complete with breakaway action, while his film study supports the idea the Cowboys could have drafted a soon-to-be fan favorite. Check out his video collection below.
