Jason Day still isn’t ready to return to competition at this week’s Rocket Classic, meaning golf fans will never know what outfits Malbon had in store for him in the Motor City.
Day, 38, withdrew from the PGA Tour event in Detroit on Monday. He has been battling a back injury since withdrawing from the U.S. Open last month during the first round at Shinnecock Hills. He shot 6-over 41 on the back nine, his first nine, including six bogeys in a row, that day, and made par at his final hole, No. 1, before being carted back to the clubhouse with his caddie. Day appeared to be in great discomfort and reached for his back while hitting his final tee shot of the championship.
He returned a week later and finished T-55 at the Travelers Championship and also attempted to compete at the British Open but missed the cut. His health remains in question as he pulled out from the 3M Open last week prior to the tournament and has now done so for the second straight week. Day enters the week at No. 74 in the FedEx Cup standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Only the top 70 make the playoffs and lock up a card for next season and Day will have but one chance – at next week’s Wyndham Championship – to attempt to play his way into the post-season if his back will cooperate.
The Aussie and 13-time Tour winner has battled an assortment of injuries throughout his career. Day's withdrawal at the U.S. Open marked the 12th time in his career that he has called it quits during a tournament. He will be replaced in the Rocket Classic field by Hayden Springer.
