A New York Jets offseason is often filled with bold predictions and lofty expectations. Linebacker Jamien Sherwood took a different approach.
Speaking with reporters during 2026 NFL minicamp, the veteran linebacker offered a candid evaluation of his own performance.
He made it clear that he is entering the 2026 season with a specific objective in mind. Rather than focusing on accolades or numbers, he wants to become a more consistent player.
"I just felt for myself I definitely could be more consistent than I was," Sherwood said. "That's another thing that I do look for going into the season."
It's an honest self-assessment. What stood out about Sherwood's comments was his willingness to critique himself despite becoming one of the Jets' most dependable defensive contributors.
The 26-year-old did not spend time highlighting his accomplishments or reflecting on the positive moments from last season. Instead, he acknowledged that his performance featured both highs and lows and that improvement remains necessary.
"There were areas where I need to improve, there were some good plays, there were some bad plays. It wasn't the best, obviously."
That level of accountability is often appreciated by coaching staffs, particularly when it comes from a veteran player expected to play a significant role within the defense. Sherwood's comments suggested he has no interest in becoming comfortable with where he currently stands.
Sherwood also identified how he plans to pursue that improvement. According to the Jets linebacker, greater consistency begins with preparation. He pointed to studying more, spending additional time after practice and continuing to grow as a teammate as areas of emphasis entering training camp and the regular season.
Those goals may not generate the same attention as a promise of sacks, tackles or Pro Bowl recognition, but they often form the foundation for sustained success. The Jets will need reliable leadership on defense as they navigate another demanding schedule, and Sherwood appears intent on setting that standard.
Training camp will provide the next opportunity for him to translate those goals into action. If his self-evaluation is any indication, Sherwood is not approaching 2026 as a player satisfied with what he has already accomplished. Instead, he is preparing for the season with the mindset that his best football may still be ahead of him.
