Losing in the NBA playoffs is never easy. Losing in a Game 7 is worse. But losing in such a fashion with four different teams across one career has got to be simply gut-wrenching.
Unfortunately for Los Angeles Clippers point guard James Harden that is now a distinction that will, at least in part, define a disappointing postseason career for a player who is likely to breeze into the Hall of Fame once his playing days are done.
The Clippers lost Game 7 in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs on the road against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night, May 3, and did so in embarrassing fashion.
Denver, the No. 4 seed, pounded Los Angeles, the No. 5 seed, to the tune of a 120-101 final score, advancing to the second round to face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.
Social media was full of Harden detractors and gloaters as the final seconds ticked off the clock. However, some of the criticisms were more than warranted considering all of the hard evidence floating around the same social media platforms -- including the following from StatMuse.
"James Harden has now lost a Game 7 with four different teams," the StatMuse X account posted Saturday.
Those teams include the Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets. The sole NBA franchise for which Harden has played and didn't lose a Game 7 is the Thunder, though he did struggle mightily in Oklahoma City's five-game defeat to the LeBron James-led Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals.
Harden finished his most recent Game 7 loss at the hands of the Nuggets with seven points, 13 assists, five rebounds, two steals and one block. He also committed two turnovers and produced a plus/minus of -29 across 35 minutes on the floor.
