SAN DIEGO – The Houston Astros recalled outfielder Jake Meyers from Triple-A Sugar Land ahead of their series opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday at Petco Park.

Meyers takes the roster spot opened by the Astros optioning Zach Dezenzo to Triple-A after Wednesday's series finale against the Blue Jays.

After the Astros acquired Daulton Varsho at the trade deadline, manager Joe Espada said he envisioned Varsho playing solely center field, where he started his first three games with the team against Toronto.

The Astros' lineup Friday against left-handed starter Robbie Ray, though, featured Meyers in center field and Varsho in left field. Taylor Trammell, a left-handed hitter like Varsho, was not in the lineup.

Meyers, the Astros' opening day center fielder, batted .206 with a 63 OPS-plus in 52 games prior to being optioned to Triple-A in early July. In his 20 games at Triple-A, Meyers had a .243/.325/.351 slash line with four extra-base hits. When not in the lineup, Meyers offers a strong defensive option off the bench.
