Jaire Alexander is opening up about why his brief run with the Philadelphia Eagles ended before he ever played a snap—and why the team later received nearly $1 million tied to his departure.
In a new Players’ Tribune essay published May 13, Alexander explained that his decision to step away from football came after a long battle with knee pain, anxiety, and the fallout from what he called the worst game of his career.
The former All-Pro cornerback said his struggles started before he arrived in Philadelphia, tracing them back to his release from the Green Bay Packers and a difficult debut with the Baltimore Ravens.

Alexander said he entered the 2025 season still dealing with a PCL injury and knee surgery from the previous year. He pushed himself to play in Baltimore’s season opener against the Buffalo Bills, despite knowing he wasn’t physically ready. The result, he wrote, completely shook his confidence.
“There’s no other way to say it: I went out there and played the worst game I’ve ever played in my entire life,” Alexander wrote. “I embarrassed myself.”
That game became the turning point. Alexander said he cried after the loss, struggled to walk back into the Ravens’ facility, and began questioning whether he could continue playing.
He later joined the Eagles in a deadline trade that sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for Alexander and a 2027 seventh-rounder. Philadelphia was preparing to play Green Bay, his former team, when his knee started swelling again.
Alexander said the thought of struggling again—this time at Lambeau Field, against the Packers—became overwhelming. Hours before the Eagles were set to travel, he texted the team that he could not continue.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’m going to do this,” he recalled writing. “I can’t keep playing like this.”
Alexander then went to the Eagles’ facility and told the team in person. He said he had an emotional conversation with then-DBs coach Christian Parker, telling him, “My head’s messed up right now. My head is truly messed up. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
Philadelphia ultimately received roughly $889,000 tied to Alexander’s departure, including $500,000 from the Ravens and $389,000 from Alexander to cover part of his signing bonus and one week’s salary. The Eagles also received a salary cap credit.
The 29-year-old was once one of the NFL’s top corners, earning two Pro Bowl selections and two second-team All-Pro nods with Green Bay. But injuries have limited him heavily in recent seasons, including shoulder, groin, and knee issues.
Alexander said he is now healthier and more at peace, and that he is not ruling out football forever. For now, though, he said happiness matters more than forcing a comeback.
