ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz believes that the Jacksonville Jaguars should make a splash at the cornerback position in free agency, signing Seattle's Riq Woolen.

"Woolen has stirred some controversy in Seattle and was benched briefly a couple of times last season due to mistakes," Schatz wrote. "But he still ranked 12th in the league in my coverage DVOA metric. He's also a larger (6-4, 210 pounds), more physical corner who could cover receivers who might be too big for the slight-framed Hunter."

Cornerback is one of the more pressing needs that the Jaguars have this offseason. With Montaric Brown and Greg Newsome free agents, the starting job opposite of Travis Hunter is up for grabs.

Woolen was named a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2022 and recently won a Super Bowl. Over his career, he has allowed a completion rate of just 57% and a modest 11.5 yards per catch. He's also had very good ball production, recording 12 interceptions and 38 pass breakups, according to PFF.

The fit makes sense, given the Jaguars' need at the position. Addressing cornerback in free agency would also provide GM James Gladstone with more flexibility come the NFL draft.

A hurdle, however, is that the Jaguars are short on salary cap space at the moment, although they have the ability to create more room. PFF is projecting that Woolen earns a three-year deal worth $45 million in free agency.

The NFL's legal tampering period opens on March 9th, at which point teams can begin negotiating deals with outside free agents.
