Training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what's to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.
What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, what takes place during training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins these roles.
Up next is the defensive tackle position.
On paper, this unit does seem pretty well set. We can expect DaVon Hamilton, Arik Armstead, Albert Regis, and Ruke Orhorhoro to make up the front of this depth chart. But typically, teams will roster five defensive tackles, which potentially leaves one spot up for grabs.
Veteran Matt Dickerson will be the presumed favorite when it comes to earning that fifth spot. As last season progressed, he carved out more playing time for himself, which included making four starts down the stretch.
That said, Dickerson is not a lock either. If a younger player like TJ Bollers, Jalen Hunter, or Keivie Rose can showcase their upside, that could earn them a spot on the 53-man roster. When it comes to those final roster spots, sometimes teams will prefer potential over a low-ceiling veteran.
For now, I'll go with Dickerson and his experience. We just haven't seen or heard enough about the younger players to know if they're ready to make a roster push. That, of course, could change over the summer, but not only is Dickerson experienced in the NFL, he also carved out a role last season in Anthony Campanile's defense, and he's had a full offseason to build upon that performance.
