How did the first wave of NFL free agency impact who the Jacksonville Jaguars might select in the 2026 NFL draft?
Compared to most, it's been a quiet free agency for the Jaguars, with only one outside addition made. GM James Gladstone recently explained the reasoning behind that.
However, given the construction of the roster, Gladstone also believes that the Jaguars will be able to enter this year's draft with flexibility, allowing the board to dictate which positions they address.
So, in a post-free agency mock draft from Sports Illustrated, who did the Jaguars select at pick No. 56?
Johnson has started the last two seasons at San Diego State and is listed at 6-0, 195 pounds.
This past season, Johnson's production took a big step forward. He allowed a completion rate of just 42% on 43 targets and held opponents to 10.3 yards per catch after surrendering 16.5 yards per reception in 2024.
Johnson also came away with four interceptions and five pass breakups. Not to be overlooked either, but he's been a reliable tackler and was one of PFF's highest graded run defenders at the cornerback position in 2025.
"The Jacksonville Jaguars need more depth at cornerback despite re-signing Montaric Brown," wrote Justin Melo. "San Diego State's Chris Johnson would be a terrific option to have at boundary corner. Johnson is a sticky coverage player who can thrive in any scheme."
Coming into free agency, cornerback was a top need for the Jaguars, but that is no longer the case after re-signing Montaric Brown. However, that doesn't mean that Gladstone is done adding to this position either. More depth and competition could be valuable.
And with the Jaguars seemingly in a position to potentially take the best player available, that very well could be Johnson when they are on the clock at pick 56 overall.
