The Jacksonville Jaguars signed running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. to a two-year, $10 million contract on March 11, 2026.
Rodriguez is expected to fill some of the void left by Travis Etienne, who left the Jaguars to sign with the New Orleans Saints in free agency.
Rodriguez will turn 26 just after the start of the 2026 season. He was born Sept. 26, 2000, in Riverdale, Georgia.
Here are five things to know about Rodriguez:
Rodriguez logged five years at the University of Kentucky, from 2018-22. He played just two games during his freshman year before red-shirting. He played in a total of 45 games at Kentucky, rushing 592 times for 3,644 yards and 32 touchdowns. During the 2021 season, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Kentucky was Liam Coen, the current Jaguars head coach.
Rodriguez was chosen by the Washington Commanders with the 193rd pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was one of 18 running backs taken in the 2023 draft. Rodriguez was the 13th running back selected.
Rodriguez was waived by the Commanders on Aug. 27, 2024, and joined their practice squad the following day. He was elevated for the Week 9 game against the New York Giants on Nov. 3, rushing 11 times for 53 yards. He was promoted to the active roster on Nov. 9.
Rodriguez was then waived again, on Nov. 23, and re-signed on Nov. 26. A week later, Rodriguez ran 13 times for a career-high 94 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.
Rodriguez played in 13 games, starting seven in 2025. He rushed for 500 yards on 112 attempts, with six touchdowns. He also had three receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Rodriguez signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Jaguars on March 11, 2026. By coming to Jacksonville, he was reunited with Coen, who was the Kentucky offensive coordinator when Rodriguez experienced his best college season in 2021. That year Rodriguez had 1,379 yards rushing with nine touchdowns, as well as 61 yards receiving and three touchdowns.
