PHOENIX – Jacob Misiorowski is an All-Star for the second year in a row, and this time without any complaints from around the league.

The Milwaukee Brewers flamethrower officially became the first player in franchise history to be selected to the All-Star Game in each of his first two years in the majors when rosters were announced July 4.

"He was deserving last year in that he was such a big story in Major League Baseball and he represented so well and finished so strong to validate at least the act," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "Deserving [or] him versus him and them, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying certainly was a great experience for him personally."

Joining Misiorowski will be his battery mate William Contreras, who will be making his third ASG appearance, while second baseman Brice Turang was snubbed from the initial selections.

Contreras and Misiorowski form the third catcher-starting pitcher duo to make an All-Star Game in Brewers history, joining Yasmani Grandal and Brandon Woodruff in 2019 and Omar Narváez and Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Woodruff in 2021.

"I think it’s cool any time you get to have a pitcher and catcher both go together," Contreras said. "It’s a beautiful moment for us. Extremely happy with him. He’s been a superstar, two selections in only two years."

Misiorowski, at 9-4 and with a 1.47 ERA, leads all pitchers in baseball in ERA, strikeouts, WHIP, average against and fWAR in a first half that has been nothing short of spectacular.

The 24-year-old put together one of the all-time greatest pitching months in baseball history in May when he went 5-0 and allowed one run across 38 ⅓ innings while striking out 57, walking six and surrendering only 14 hits.

On June 12, he pitched one of the most dominant games ever, recording the most strikeouts ever in a “Maddux” – a shutout on fewer than 100 pitches – with 15 against the Phillies.

It was those same Phillies who led the charge of backlash to Misiorowski being named an All-Star last year after only pitching in five career games, the fewest appearances ever for a player named to the game.

"Obviously not getting picked last year, you kind of had that in the back of your head: 'Maybe I don’t belong,'" Misiorowski said. "This year I think I proved it wasn’t a fluke thing and I do belong to go to events like this. It’s really cool."

This year, Misiorowski left no question as to his worthiness by putting himself in a position to be considered to start the game for Dave Roberts’ National League squad, although his pitching schedule with the Brewers looks like it will preclude him from participating in the game itself.

"I mean, I get it," Misiorowski said. "We're not looking for right now. We're looking for September, October. It sucks; obviously I want to throw in a game like that but so be it."

Contreras leads all National League catchers in fWAR (1.9) while batting .293 with a .774 OPS entering play July 4, yet isn't quite content with his performance to date.

"While some people may think I’m having a good year and having good numbers up to this point, I still don’t think I’m going to conform to those numbers," Contreras said. "I want to be able to strive for more. There’s more personal goals that I have and just different numbers I’m going to continue to try and work hard to achieve."

Said Murphy: "That’s part of what makes him great, is he has standards that are super high. I’m not surprised he thinks that."

Turang, meanwhile, is among the highest snubs in baseball on account of entering the day tied for 14th among all position players in WAR on both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference. He has yet to be an All-Star in his career despite winning a Platinum Glove in 2024 and taking 14th in MVP voting last year.

Murphy also pointed out Jake Bauers, who ranks fourth among NL first basemen in OPS, and Kyle Harrison as players he'd like to see get when the National League experiences drop-outs.
