Hitting home runs in their debut seems to be in the Lombard family’s blood. On Tuesday, top prospect George Lombard Jr. made his debut at shortstop for the New York Yankees, and he hit a solo shot in the fifth inning, and on an 0-2 count, no less, in their 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at home.
Earlier in the day, the Yankees shortstop’s younger brother Jacob, who was the Miami Marlins’ first-round pick in 2026 (14th overall), went yard for his first career hit in Single-A. Suffice to say, everything is looking up for the Lombard family, and Jacob praised his brother for pulling off quite a momentous feat in his big-league debut.
“That felt awesome. It was unbelievable,” the younger Lombard said in an appearance on SportsCenter.

In fact, the Marlins’ top prospect recalled watching his older brother go yard on live television all while his minor-league game was ongoing, as he caught a glimpse of the action during a mound visit.
“We called a pitcher’s meeting. A mound visit, right as my brother was coming up to the plate. There’s a TV right on the third-base line. So I got to watch his AB and his home run. I’m screaming at third base, ‘I think he just hit a home run!’ The TV shows my parents hugging, and I was like, ‘Oh my, he just did that,'” Lombard added.
The Yankees certainly believe that George is destined for great things, and they are wasting no time with his promotion amid the team’s plethora of injury problems. Lombard is seen as the long-term solution at shortstop, and this impressive debut, in all facets of the ball, is a mere glimpse of the 21-year-old’s potential.
Meanwhile, Jacob could be in the big leagues by 2028 or perhaps even earlier if he continues to rake for the Marlins in their minor-league system.
