Louisville native Jacob Abel finished 24th out of 33 drivers in the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The 25-year-old rookie finished one lap behind from first in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” He started the race from the outside of Row 10 after qualifying 30th in the field.
Heading into race day, Abel was one of the biggest long shots on the board, carrying +30000 odds, the third-lowest among the 33 drivers.
Despite the uphill battle, the Louisville native earned a spot in the iconic race driving the No. 51 Chevrolet for Abel Motorsports, the family-owned team operated by his father, Bill Abel.
Abel originally finished 32nd during qualifying with a four-lap average speed of 228.169 mph, but moved up the starting grid after two competitors failed post-session inspections.
The Indy 500 marked his first IndyCar Series start of the season; he competed full-time on the circuit in 2025 but finished 27th in the points standings, lowest among full-time drivers.
Felix Rosenqvist won the Indy 500, his first, adding a huge milestone to an already accomplished racing career.
