Jack Gaughan confirms new Manchester City contract for Josko Gvardiol
  • Manchester City have shut down intense interest from Spain by locking down Josko Gvardiol to a new long-term contract.
  • Real Madrid’s attempts to lure the versatile 24-year-old away from the Etihad Stadium have officially collapsed.
  • The contract renewal marks arguably Director of Football Hugo Viana’s most crucial defensive statement since arriving at the helm.

Josko Gvardiol will sign a new contract with Manchester City this summer, it has been confirmed by regional media.

With sporting director Hugo Viana simultaneously managing a hugely significant summer transfer window in light of Pep Guardiola’s exit, retaining existing stars deemed as core assets in the existing project is also a priority.

In terms of incoming business, City’s activity is expected to be headlined by an impending British-record pursuit for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, with the England international expected to be the long-term replacement for Bernardo Silva.

However, the strategic importance of securing Gvardiol’s long-term future cannot be overstated as the club transitions into Enzo Maresca‘s era of management at the Etihad Stadium.

The Croatia star, who won Manchester City’s Player of the Season award in 2024/25, endured a frustrating past campaign that was heavily disrupted for four months after sustaining a painful leg fracture in January.

Despite that setback, the 24-year-old remained a number-one renewal target for the club’s incoming manager as he aims to retain a system identical to Guardiola’s vision and wrestle the Premier League crown back from Arsenal when the 2026/27 campaign kicks off.

Josko Gvardiol to sign new Man City contract

Now, as confirmed by MailSport reporter Jack Gaughan, Josko Gvardiol is set to sign a new Manchester City contract until 2031.

Follow-up reporting from Fabrizio Romano further insisted that a move to Spain for the central defender is now off for this summer, with the Croatian seen as a key player by sporting director Hugo Viana and incoming head coach Enzo Maresca.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
