Well, the Chicago Blackhawks finally provided an update on Connor Bedard’s status on Wednesday, and it was precisely what everyone feared. Following an awkward spill into the boards during offseason training in Vancouver, Bedard requires surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to miss the start of the regular season. Brutal.

More in the links for the video of Bedard’s hard crash on July 2, and what it means for the Blackhawks now that he’s set to miss serious time.

Also in Blackhawks news, defenseman Ian Cole spoke with the media for the first time since signing a one-year contract on the opening day of free agency.

Around the league, the Utah Mammoth effectively retained Barrett Hayton, an update on Cale Makar’s extension, and eight fan bases that should be insulted by their club’s offseason.

All that & more in the Daily!

Blackhawks Offseason, News & Trade Rumors

Chicago Hockey Now: Heartbreaking. Another freak accident will force Connor Bedard to miss serious time, as he’s out for approximately four months while recovering from successful left shoulder surgery. Here’s everything to know about Bedard’s recent injury.

More CHN: Bedard’s injury adds another interesting wrinkle into his negotiations as a restricted free agent. While Bedard still needs a new contract, goaltender Drew Commesso does not. Commesso inked a two-year extension on Monday.

More CHN: NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently weighed in on Bedard’s status as a restricted free agent following Leo Carlsson’s signed offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers. There’s no real concern about Bedard signing an offer sheet, but you never know in today’s landscape.

One day after Cole Smith was introduced to the media, Ian Cole chatted with everyone for the first time on Wednesday, not too long after the Bedard news was announced. Cole talked about the trajectory of the franchise intriguing him during negotiations. He also mentioned that Bedard reached out via text to welcome him to the Blackhawks, much like he did with Smith.

Sadly, the two likely won’t play their first game as teammates until early-to-mid November.

It will now be later than expected, but here's what Ian Cole had to say about sharing the ice with Connor Bedard:

"He was texting me, we were talking a little bit, and (he) seems very ready to have a great year and help our team win hockey games.

(With a) superb high high-end…

Lastly, here’s a video that surfaced on social media of Anton Frondell’s offseason training. He’ll need to hit it even harder now that he’s in line to center the Blackhawks’ top line to begin next season.

Frondell segue treinando pra ser o próximo he-man ️ (e sempre representando a firma)

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

New Jersey Hockey Now: The most notable news from Wednesday, the Utah Mammoth officially matched forward Barrett Hayton’s one-year, $4.775 million offer sheet he signed with the New Jersey Devils. While it didn’t work this time, James Nichols writes it was a worthy attempt by Sunny Mehta. Expect the Devils to keep swinging.

The Athletic: Sean McIndoe breaks down which of these eight NHL fan bases should be most insulted by the offseason so far? Most fans will surely be shocked the Blackhawks weren’t mentioned.

Detroit Hockey Now: Former Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t out of work for long, as he was hired by the Montreal Canadiens as an assistant coach on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Could the Pittsburgh Penguins be the ultimate landing spot for Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson? Dan Kingerski from PHN isn’t a fan of the idea.

NHL.com: The Carolina Hurricanes players, front office members, staff, and more have officially had their names etched onto the Stanley Cup. Curiously, Tom Dundon, the owner of the team, put his entire family’s name on the Cup over other organization members. Huh.

The Sheet: According to David Pagnotta, the new price tag for restricted free-agent forward Cutter Gauthier could be as high as $15 million per year. What a mess of an offseason for the Anaheim Ducks. That will be tough to afford if the Ducks match Philadelphia’s offer sheet.

Colorado Hockey Now: Elliotte Friedman mentioned on Monday’s episode of 32 Thoughts that if Cale Makar wants to become the highest-paid defenseman in hockey, it’s entirely up to him. The Colorado Avalanche are seemingly willing to hand him a blank check with a signature already on it.
