Here are five things to know about J.P. Estrella, the former Tennessee forward who committed to Michigan out of the transfer portal on Thursday.

➤The 6-11, 240-pound big man averaged 10.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 18.3 minutes per game this season for the Volunteers, who reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Michigan, 95-62.

➤As a high school prospect, Estrella was ranked a four-star in the 2023 recruiting class. He was ranked the No. 3 player in Maine, the No. 9 center nationally and the No. 61 player overall by the 247Sports Composite. He committed to Tennessee in September 2022.

➤For his senior year of high school, Estrella transferred from South Portland (Maine) High School to the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and led the team to a 35-2 record and national ranking of No. 8 by MaxPreps.

➤Estrella’s parents are Mark and Allie, and he has a younger brother, Cameron. His mother was named Miss Basketball in Maine in 1995 and went on to a four-year basketball career at Boston College.

➤Estrella became the first player from Maine to play for the Volunteers, and Estrella said the biggest reason he chose Tennessee was coach Rick Barnes. He also had offers from Duke, UConn, Kansas, Kentucky and many other top programs.
