The NFL has several offseason position battles underway as teams prepare for minicamps and training camp. One of the most closely watched competitions is unfolding with the Minnesota Vikings, where J.J. McCarthy is battling free-agent addition Kyler Murray for the starting quarterback job.

After McCarthy received criticism following his recent media availability, reports now suggest there may be a reason for his less-than-confident demeanor. Early indications from Vikings practices show Murray holding a significant advantage over McCarthy in terms of performance, and according to observers, the gap is not particularly close.

“Murray made all of the best throws of the practice, demonstrating his downfield touch and accuracy. Nothing McCarthy did was objectionable, and one of his few incompletions — a pass to the flat that cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. nearly intercepted — occurred when two receivers drifted far too close to each other,” Kevin Seifert of ESPN reported.

Seifert also noted that while the practices are still being conducted without pads and remain in the early stages of the offseason, “the gap between the two quarterbacks was not close.” That is a noteworthy assessment at this point in the process, especially considering that most position competitions tend to appear much tighter during offseason workouts.

Not off to a hot start

Typically, these battles look more competitive before the pads come on. Quarterbacks can operate with greater confidence and freedom when they are not facing live contact. However, when combined with the perception created by McCarthy‘s recent press conference, this report paints an unfavorable picture for the young quarterback.

There is still plenty of time before the regular season begins in September. McCarthy could certainly elevate his play once training camp intensifies and the pads come on. However, the early returns have not been encouraging.

According to this report, Murray has not only performed at a higher level on the field, but he has also handled himself well in front of the media. The difference appears to extend beyond talent alone, with Murray also displaying a clear edge in experience and leadership.

No one is faulting McCarthy for feeling frustrated by the circumstances. He is human, and the situation is understandable. However, the way he responds to adversity and performs under pressure will continue to draw scrutiny.

There is still time for the competition to shift, but at the moment, McCarthy appears to be trailing in every phase of the battle. If he hopes to claim the QB1 job, he will need to turn things around quickly.
