It's official — the 2027 NFL Draft will be in Washington, DC.
The NFL nailed down the dates and announced them on Thursday. The Commanders will be the host team for the three-day draft, which begins on Thursday night, April 29, and continues Friday night, April 30, and wraps up Saturday afternoon, May 1. Round 1 is held on Thursday night, rounds 2 and 3 on Friday night, and rounds 4 through 7 on Saturday afternoon.
I guess that means the NFL Draft and Kentucky Derby will both be held on Saturday, May 1. You may recall that the Kentucky Derby is annually held on the first Saturday in May. By the way, for the locals, the Apple Blossom Parade and Festivities are also held in Winchester on the first Saturday of May.
NFL teams have, in recent years, gone the outside route, attempting to get as many of their fans into the local popular venue to host the draft. Thus, for Washington, the NFL Draft will be conducted on the National Mall. On May 5, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that the 2027 draft would be held in the nation's capital, on the National Mall. The announcement included NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Commanders majority owner Josh Harris, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser when the initial concept was announced locally.
Not only will the National Mall serve as the anchor for the draft and the television coverage, but the setting will be in front of the Capitol building. Thursday, the NFL also announced the NFL Draft Experience will extend from Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 7th streets.
Washington, D.C., last hosted the NFL Draft way back in the Sammy Baugh era in 1941. Things were much different in those days. Events such as the NFL Draft were held in hotel lobbies. That draft was held at the Willard Hotel. Hey, it was 1941, World War II was underway, and the NFL certainly didn't match WWII in importance.
The 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay (600,000) and the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh (800,000) were said to be smashing successes, setting attendance records. You can bet the NFL expects record numbers next year in the nation's capital.
