Israeli Olympic bosses have officially complained to a Swiss broadcaster and demanded a probe into whether a commentator should continue working at the Winter Games after he criticized an Israeli bob athlete.
The commentator accused Adam Edelman of supporting "genocide in Gaza" and referred to Edelman's public statements on social media.
Broadcaster RTS has removed the recording of the two-man event from its website but defended its employee. RTS is the French-language subsidiary of the public Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.
The Times of Israel reported late on Wednesday that the Olympic Committee of Israel (OCI) had sent a formal letter of complaint demanding an apology from the Swiss broadcaster.
“The remarks made during the broadcast were one-sided, political and inflammatory, and had no place on an Olympic platform,” OCI chief Gili Lustig wrote in the letter to the broadcaster, the newspaper reported.
The OCI said it expects “the publication of a clear and public apology by RTS” as well as “an immediate review of the commentator’s continued involvement in Olympic-related broadcasts, including consideration of suspending the commentator from Olympic coverage.”
Edelman and team-mate Menachem Chen came 26th in the two-man event, which ended on Tuesday with a German podium sweep.
On Monday, the RTS commentator questioned whether Edelman should have been allowed to compete at all, given that International Olympic Committee guidelines exclude athletes who actively support war.
The guidelines refer to athletes from Russia and Belarus who, amid Russia's war in Ukraine, are only allowed to compete at the Winter Games under a neutral flag if they prove the do not support the conflict.
