The welterweight title will be on the line in the UFC 330 main event on Aug. 15 in Philadelphia. Champion Islam Makhachev faces No. 2 ranked Ian Machado Garry in his first 170-pound title defense inside Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Makhachev, the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, will enter the championship bout as a heavy betting favorite. He's tied with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history with 16. The Russian expects surpass Silva with a win at UFC 330 and predicts that he'll finish "The Future."
"This fight I will take more risk to finish my opponent because I like it, finish my opponents, you know? This fight I think, honestly, from the first time when I take him down, I have chance to finish him because I saw his ground game is not so good," Machachev told MMAJunkie.com.
"He has good striking, long reach, you know, long arm. He control the distance, always go back. But I see when I take him down, it's going to be (a) finish."
Makhachev relinquished the lightweight championship in June 2025 after four successful title defenses to chase becoming a two-division UFC titleholder. He captured the welterweight world title in his last outing in November. He dominated then-champion Jake Della Maddalena in the UFC 322 main event on his way to a unanimous decision win.
