While it hadn't been fully confirmed, Tiger Woods had been talking for several weeks about a return to competition at the Masters Tournament in 2026.

But one day after his appearance in The Golf League's playoffs, that plan had a definitive end.

Woods was in a car accident on March 27 and has been charged with DUI. On March 31, he declared that he was stepping away from golf to seek treatment.

Both the Masters Tournament and the PGA Tour made public statements of support for the former No. 1 golfer in the world.

Woods has won five green jackets, the latest in an upset result in 2019. Woods' professional career has stagnated since then due to a host of medical issues and, now, multiple car accidents.

Why is Tiger Woods not playing the 2026 Masters?

According to Golfweek on March 27, "Woods was traveling at a high rate of speed in a Land Rover and attempted to pass a truck pulling a trailer on a two-lane road when Woods swiped the trailer and his vehicle rolled on its side, coming to rest on the driver's side, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Woods crawled out of the vehicle and showed signs of impairment."

In later published reports of police body-cam footage, officers were concerned with Woods' health after the accident and him failing a field sobriety test.

He eventually posted a statment saying he was stepping away from golf.

Tiger Woods' history at the Masters

After a pair of appearances as the US Amateur champion -- and the only missed cut at Augusta in his career -- Woods announced the dominance to come with a record romp in 1997, shooting an 18-under 270 to win by 12 shots. It, at the time, made him the youngest Masters champion and the holder of the best total score.

Woods also donned the green jacket in 2001, 2002 and 2005 before the 2019 shocker. From 2005-11, he never finished worse than sixth here.

But injuries began to take their toll. Woods did not play in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021. Since the COVID Masters of 2020, Woods has not shot a round in the 60s at Augusta National, and under par only once in 10 tries.

He made the cut in 2023 but was forced to withdraw in the third round, and shot 82-77 on the weekend in 2024, clearly suffering from the aftereffects of multiple surgeries.
