The wait for Mikaela Shiffrin's first attempt at a gold medal during the 2026 Winter Olympics is almost over, and it'll come as part of a star-studded American duo.
Shiffrin is set to compete alongside Breezy Johnson, fresh off her gold medal in the women's downhill competition at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, in the women's Alpine skiing team combined event on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Johnson will compete in the downhill portion of the event, while Shiffrin is scheduled to complete the slalom run.
Shiffrin, 30, is starting competition in her fourth Olympics and owns three career medals. She won a gold medal in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and followed it with another gold in the giant slalom at the 2018 Winter Games. She could potentially double that haul at these Olympics. Shiffrin and Johnson won the team combined at the 2025 World Championships when the event made its international debut.
“It’s so much pressure as well as being this really cool event,” Johnson exclusively told USA TODAY Sports on Monday, Feb. 9. “You don't want to let down the greatest of all time, obviously. To give her a good downhill run feels like passing Kobe Bryant a great layup. You want to do that. You want to be able to pass the ball right. You don't want to miss that shot.”
Here's more on Shiffrin's schedule during the alpine skiing team combined event, as well as during the remainder of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
