The Baltimore Ravens are facing a must-win game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 17. Will they have their top quarterback at their disposal for the contest?
Lamar Jackson is dealing with a back injury that knocked him out of the Ravens' "Sunday Night Football" loss in Week 16. The Ravens will be hoping he can return to action in Week 17, as a loss would eliminate them from playoff contention.
Jackson was unable to practice on Tuesday before Ravens coach John Harbaugh provided an update on his status Wednesday.
Here's what to know about Jackson's injury and whether he will be able to play in Week 17.
Harbaugh told reporters Dec. 24 its currently "undetermined" whether Jackson will play in Week 17 against the Packers.
Jackson was listed as a non-participant at Ravens practice both Tuesday and Wednesday. Harbaugh referred to the 28-year-old quarterback as "day-to-day" when discussing his injury.
"We'll see where he's at tomorrow and as we go forward," Harbaugh said.
The 63-year-old coach also clarified Jackson would not necessarily need to practice in order to be active for Saturday's game.
"He could play without that practice for sure," Harbaugh said. "He's played a lot of football, won a lot of games for us. If he's ready to go, he will go. If he can go, he will go. You can bet on that."
The Ravens need to beat the Packers when they meet Saturday to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Jackson is dealing with a serious back contusion that knocked him out of his team's "Sunday Night Football" loss to the New England Patriots.
Jackson left the game late in the first half after taking a knee to the back while sliding following a three-yard gain. The veteran quarterback remained in the game for one play – a handoff to Keaton Mitchell that lost 5 yards – before the Ravens called a timeout and brought him to the sideline.
Jackson was originally deemed "questionable" to return because of the back ailment before being ruled out in the fourth quarter. Baltimore blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead in the 28-24 loss.
Harbaugh was mum about Jackson's status moving forward when announcing the quarterback was dealing with "a bruise of some kind" after the game.
"I don't know how serious it will be," Harbaugh said. "We'll have to find out the next couple of days."
Tyler Huntley is the Ravens' backup quarterback and would be trusted as the team's starter if Jackson can't go. The 27-year-old completed 9 of 10 passes for 65 yards in relief of Jackson against the Patriots and won his lone start filling in for Jackson earlier in the season.
Huntley has completed 76.6% of his passes for 319 yards and one touchdown in his limited action with the Ravens this season. He has a career record of 6-9 in 15 starts and has completed 65.7% of his career passes for 3,105 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
The Ravens have three quarterbacks currently in their organization. They are as follows:
Rush began the season as the Ravens' backup before losing the job to Huntley. The long-time Dallas Cowboys quarterback went 0-2 in two starts in place of Jackson earlier in the season and has completed 65.4% of his passes for 303 yards and four interceptions.
Rush, 32, figures to back up Huntley is Jackson is unable to play Saturday.
