For a third straight World Cup, Germany's tournament has ended earlier than expected.
Paraguay stunned the heavily favored Germans in the round of 32 on Monday, June 29, winning 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.
The win saw Paraguay advance to the round of 16, where it will face the winner between France and Sweden.
It was a shocking result for Julian Nagelsmann's side, which finished first place in Group E, earning the right to face a Paraguay side that finished third in Group D.
But Germany is heading home early, which was also the case in 2018 and 2022 when it was knocked out at the group stage.
Those two early exits followed Germany's biggest triumph in recent decades. Led by head coach Joachim Löw, Germany won the 2014 World Cup by defeating Argentina in the final. Mario Götze scored the extra-time winner in the final.
It was Germany's fourth World Cup title and first since 1990.
