Ipswich Town lasted just one season in the Premier League - Reuters/Scott Heppell
So that is that for Ipswich Town. Relegated before the start of May, heading back to the Championship again.
It has been a brief, albeit occasionally spirited, stay from Kieran McKenna’s side, but they went down with a whimper, well beaten by Newcastle United, whose victory lifted them back up to third in the table and maintained their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
Eddie Howe’s side were far from their best, but were still far too good for Ipswich, especially after Ben Johnson was dismissed seven minutes before half time.
The full back was shown a yellow card for a dive trying to win a penalty and then hauled back Alexander Isak whose lovely bit of skill had embarrassed him. He can have no complaints.
It was the first impressive thing Isak had done in the game and it was the Sweden international who gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot.
Referee Michael Salisbury had one of those games where he annoyed both sets of supporters with his erratic decision making and having initially waved away Newcastle’s appeals for a foul on Jacob Murphy, he was told to look again by the VAR officials and decided Julio Enciso had pulled him back inside the box.
Newcastle peppered the Ipswich goal, Bruno Guimaraes having a goal ruled out for a very soft foul on goalkeeper Alex Palmer before Sandro Tonali hit the crossbar and Isak missed two chances he should have taken.
It was one way traffic after the break and Newcastle doubled their lead through Dan Burn’s close range header and added a third through substitute William Osula.

‘Credit to the boys we kept digging’
Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon speaking to Premier League Productions: “I feel amazing. Very very happy. It was a difficult game, they made it hard for us, particularly in the first half. But credit to the boys we kept digging, had most of the ball in the second half and thankfully got the winner.
“We knew it was going to be difficult to come here. They’ve got the chance to play with freedom because unfortunately for them they are already down, so the pressure is off. They showed their quality with the free-kick and we just had to respond in the second half. Thankfully we did.”

‘That was good fun’
Brighton defender Lewis Dunk speaking to Sky Sports: “That was good fun. We started excellently but once we went 1-0 up we stopped playing and the intensity dropped. Second half they started better but he showed character to win the game.
“We have worked on tactics needing a goal in the last minute and that wasn’t a tactic. But he [Carlos Baleba] put it in the top corner so the gaffer cannot say anything.”

One-way traffic since half time
It has been one-way traffic since half time as Newcastle attack towards the Gallowgate End. Ipswich had not been able to relieve the pressure and the home side finally score their second goal, a close range header from Dan Burn.
It has been a strange sort of game but the Magpies are in control and could easily score more against opponents who are down to 10 men.

Referee Salisbury having quite the day
Referee Michael Salisbury is having quite the day. He’s managed to upset both sets of supporters but has incensed Newcastle’s the most in the last few minutes. He somehow missed a pretty blatant penalty when Julio Enciso tugged back Jacob Murphy in the box.
This time VAR have intervened and Alexander Isak, who has had a really poor game by his standards, has converted it. Newcastle deserve their lead. They have had two efforts cleared off the line and Tonali has hit the crossbar too.

Oh dear Ben Johnson
Oh dear Ben Johnson. The Ipswich full back was booked for a ridiculous dive trying to con a penalty and has just been shown a red card for a second bookable offence, hauling Alexander Isak back after the Sweden international had dinked the ball past him with a lovely bit of skill.
It’s the first good thing Isak has done all afternoon and the striker has missed two excellent chances as well, the first a header from Harvey Barnes’s cross and the second almost immediately when he made a complete hash of a volley from Jacob Murphy’s pass.

Guimaraes goal ruled out
Newcastle will feel very hard done by as Bruno Guimaraes has a goal ruled out for a foul. As far as I could tell he just stood his ground as goalkeeper Alex Palmer jumped into him, dropping the ball on to the Newcastle’s player back and into his own net.
Referee Michael Salisbury awarded the free kick and VAR did not see enough wrong with the decision to overturn it.
Newcastle are slowly cranking up the pressure on the visiting defence but they are not really creating clear cut chances.

28 mins: Wolves 0 Leicester 0
Toti Gomes has been booked for Wolves after fouling Facundo Buonanotte. The home side have seen more of the ball in the opening half an hour.
But Leicester’s Conor Coady and Jamie Vardy have both had attempts on goal. Coady’s header was saved while Vardy missed the target with his own attempted headed effort.

Ipswich have looked the better side
Ipswich have come very close to taking the lead. A terrible pass out from the back by Dan Burn gifted the ball to Liam Delap but his attempt to stroke the ball into the far corner through a crowded penalty area was deflected narrowly wide.
The visitors have looked the better side so far with Newcastle struggling to get into their rhythm.

Willock comes in for Joelinton
Manager Eddie Howe may have returned for Newcastle United after recovering from pneumonia but his midfielder enforcer Joelinton misses out with a knee injury. It means, after seven games unchanged, there is an alteration to the starting XI with Joe Willock coming in.
Willock has had a strange season. Having missed most of the previous campaign with various injuries he has not really found any sort of form this term and has largely been a disappointment.
Newcastle have needed more from their squad players like him and it will be interesting to see how he fares against Ipswich today.
The Magpies recruitment team will be keeping a very close eye on Ipswich striker Liam Delap who is a summer transfer target for the North East club.
Delap has had a breakthrough season at Ipswich and is attracting interest from a host of clubs ahead of the summer. Newcastle are certainly one possible destination for him and he will want to impress today.

Howe returns for Newcastle and Ipswich’s fate could be sealed
Good afternoon and welcome to clockwatch coverage of this afternoon’s four 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League.
Brighton host West Ham and will be without striker Joao Pedro after his red card against Brentford last week. West Ham will be without Edson Alvarez but are hopeful Aaron Wan-Bissaka will return after the full-back missed out last weekend.
Newcastle, with Eddie Howe back in the dugout, welcome Ipswich to St James’ Park. Fabian Schar is edging closer to a return and could feature in some capacity this afternoon but Sven Botman is likely to miss out. Ipswich will be without defender Leif Davis who starts his three-game suspension. Striker Liam Delap is in line to start. Ipswich will be relegated if they fail to win, or if West Ham avoid defeat against Brighton.
Southampton take on Fulham and have no new injury concerns. Fulham on the other hand will be without striker Rodrigo Muniz but could welcome Emile Smith Rowe back after the midfielder missed last weekend’s game against west London neighbours Chelsea.
Wolves face relegated Leicester and the home side are expected to have Jose Sa back in goal after the goalkeeper picked up an injury in the warm-up ahead of last weekend’s victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Leicester will be missing Stephy Mavididi after he suffered a muscle injury against Liverpool. Kasey McAteer could feature after returning to training this week.
