The young Iowa women’s basketball team is finding its groove at the right time. The Hawkeyes were able to edge out Illinois in a down-to-the-wire matchup in their regular season home finale, 82-78, Thursday night.

All season long head coach Jan Jensen has preached the ‘pass the baton’ mentality, and Thursday’s game proved that. Seven different players had at least one rebound for the Hawkeyes, and eight different players scored.

Ava Heiden led the way with 28 points, while freshman Journey added a valuable nine points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

After the game was tied at 35 at halftime, Illinois continued to make runs at Iowa. The Fighting Illini grew its lead to six points in the fourth quarter. Former Hawkeye Aaliyah Guyton scored 11 points for Illinois.

Nevertheless, Iowa made winning plays and free throws down the stretch to finish the regular season 14-1 at home.

Next up for Iowa is a road game at Wisconsin on Sunday.
