The wide receiver room is going to be thinner than expected for the Iowa football team in 2026.

News broke on Monday that second-year wide receiver Terrence Smith will not be with the program in the fall. The reasons for his departure are still unclear at the moment.

247Sports' Eliot Clough reported that Smith will no longer be on Iowa's roster this fall.

Smith was a three-star signee in Iowa’s 2025 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound receiver was the 537th-best prospect, the No. 79 wide receiver and the No. 14 player in the state of Illinois in the 2025 class, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

Smith was a big recruiting win for Kirk Ferentz and company. His departure leaves a hole for the Hawkeyes to fill this season.

NEWS:

Per multiple sources and as confirmed by an Iowa spokesperson, second-year wide receiver, Terrence Smith will not be on the roster this fall for the Hawkeyes. Smith was 3⭐️ prospect out of West Aurora High School in the class of 2025.

While Smith wasn’t slated to start, he was one of the young receivers with the most upside on the roster. Iowa now needs to hit the recruiting trail hard at that position to replenish the cupboard. That’ll start with the 2027 class and continue from there.

There’s still a good nucleus of wide receivers to play with. Reece Vander Zee, Dayton Howard, Tony Diaz, Evan James, Jarriett Buie, and KJ Parker all have multiple years of eligibility left. Still, losing Smith is a tough pill to swallow, especially this late in the offseason. Iowa will need production from those other guys in the coming years to help make up for the loss.
