When Zach Lutmer walked off the field at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa a few months ago, he wasn't sure if he had played his last game as a Hawkeye or not.
Iowa had just beaten Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl to wrap up the 2025 season. With the season over, it was time for eligible underclassmen to decide if they were off to the NFL draft or if they'd be returning to their programs for the 2026 college football season. For some, the decision was easy. For others, it took a bit more time and thought.
That was the case for Lutmer, who found himself draft eligible after a breakout redshirt sophomore campaign. He had 71 total tackles, seven passes defended, three interceptions, and a touchdown in Phil Parker's defense. His ability to always be around the ball and his penchant for splash plays from the secondary reminded many fans of a young Cooper DeJean.
DeJean declared for the draft following his third season in Iowa City, and now Lutmer had to choose whether or not to do the same. Lutmer decided to return to Iowa for his redshirt junior season, a massive win for the program and for the Hawkeye defense.
Lutmer explained his decision-making process to the media on Tuesday.
"There was maybe thoughts (of declaring for the draft) early, but I thought it was the best decision for me to come back," Lutmer said. "There was a lot of unfinished business that I needed to do and improve on. I didn’t feel like I was ready to take that next leap. There’s a lot of things that I can improve on and focus on for next year to become a better player."
Lutmer's return is even bigger considering the pieces that Iowa is losing in the secondary from last season. Xavier Nwankpa, TJ Hall, and Koen Entringer are all gone, leaving some big shoes to be filled. Lutmer will be a Swiss Army Knife that Parker can deploy wherever he sees fit, which should only help his NFL draft stock.
The Hawkeyes' defense is poised to have another strong season in 2026, and Lutmer will be at the center of it all.
