Following ninth-seeded Iowa's (24-12, 10-10 Big Ten) wild 77-71 victory in the Sweet 16 over fourth-seeded Nebraska (28-7, 15-5 Big Ten) at Houston's Toyota Center, the Hawkeyes discussed a bizarre late-game sequence that proved to be a final difference-maker.
When asked about his perspective on the critical Hawkeyes' unprecedented late-game man-advantage with only four Cornhuskers players on the court, Alvaro Folgueiras took a jab at Nebraska for their lack of awareness in that moment.
"I'm from the south of Spain. I'm from a small neighborhood called El Palo, and we are known for being, you know, a little more life smart than some other places," Folgueiras said with a rye smile to various media members after the game.
"So I just noticed that they were all trying to figure out who they were guarding and that there were just four players on the court. I could make eye contact with Kael (Combs). The referee gave the ball. After like two or three seconds of me jumping, saying, 'Let's go, let's go, let's go,' and we had enough time to get the pass ready because there were just four players and I was the only one open at the end of the court."
"I was pretty shocked to see Alvaro wide open," Bennett Stirtz said. "I didn't even know they had four players on (the floor) until we were in the locker room. Kael threw a great pass. We were able to move on the baseline, so that helped out a lot, and Al had a nice dunk."
Tate Sage revealed the original plan out of the timeout was to get Stirtz the ball before realizing Folgueiras was unguarded down the court.
"It was kind of the same for me. We were going to throw it to Bennett, but then we looked down and Alvaro had nobody on him, so we're, like, 'Kael, throw it.' And ended up getting the bucket," Sage said.
Iowa looks to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 1980 on Saturday evening with a win over third-seeded Illinois (27-8, 15-5 Big Ten) at the Toyota Center in Houston. That Elite Eight clash between Big Ten foes will be nationally broadcast on TBS and truTV with tipoff scheduled for 5:09 p.m. CT.
