Insider Would Not Be Surprised If Kayshon Boutte Is Asking For Trade Amid A.J. Brown Rumors originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots are expected to acquire A.J. Brown after June 1, and many believe Kayshon Boutte's absence from voluntary offseason workouts could be related to that move.
After releasing Stefon Diggs, the Patriots already signed Romeo Doubs. Adding Brown would significantly hurt Boutte's target share. He has been working out alone and has not joined the team yet. It could be nothing, but he is one year away from free agency and could be looking to get moved. There are no reports of him demanding a trade, but Patriots insider Tom E. Curran would not be surprised if he was asking to get moved.
"He's done everything he possibly could for a sixth-round pick for a few years," Curran said on Monday. "His numbers are down because he doesn't get the ball enough, so he's not going to have a huge bounty as an X receiver when he does get to become a free agent, so I wouldn't blame him if he's saying, 'you know what? That was fun, but it would be better for my career if I were to play someplace else.' Whether he's trying to force a trade or register, 'I'm not that into it, or whether he's just saying, 'I like working out on my own.' I don't know, but it wouldn't me if he’s saying 'anything we can do about moving me?'"
The reality is that the Patriots will not need to re-sign him if they land Brown. They will have Doubs and Brown for the next few years and could look to utilize Kyle Williams as the No. 3 receiver. Boutte likely sees the writing on the wall for him to be let go, and he may want to play somewhere he can produce more before hitting the open market.
Right now, it's unclear what's going on with Boutte. However, it would not be illogical to assume he may want to get traded.
