The heat is increasing in Tampa Bay as the front office is taking its sweet time with Baker Mayfield’s contract extension talks.

Mayfield is sticking to his late-July deadline for listening to any offers. It is also the perfect situation for the trade rumor mill to start brewing.

With Mayfield’s future still largely uncertain with the Bucs, analysts have already started mapping out potential trades for the Bucs to secure their next franchise quarterback, in case Mayfield doesn’t return next season.

One name who has been making rounds in the trade market, Shedeur Sanders, was interestingly linked with the Bucs.

PFSN’s Cooper Kleinberg listed three teams that make the most sense in a potential Shedeur Sanders trade, and the Bucs were chosen as one of the top suitors.

“There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding Baker Mayfield this offseason, and the rest of the quarterback room doesn’t offer much long-term optimism. Behind Mayfield are veteran Jake Browning, along with Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels,” Kleinberg wrote.

“If contract negotiations with Mayfield ultimately fall through and the Buccaneers disappoint this season, they’ll likely be in the market for quarterback talent… Sanders could give the Buccaneers a developmental option behind Mayfield before eventually taking over as the team’s long-term starter.”

Shedeur Sanders-Bucs Trade Highly Unlikely

The Pewter Plank’s Josh Crysler views the hypothetical trade as a flashy but entirely unrealistic scenario.

PFSN listed the Buccaneers as one of the top-3 teams that should pursue a Shedeur Sanders trade with the Browns.

A chief reason for that skepticism stems from Sanders' troubling turnover rate last season.

“While it’s true that Browning doesn’t inspire much confidence as the backup, coming off a season where he went 0-3 as a starter and threw more interceptions than touchdowns, Sanders didn’t fare much better. Sanders went 3-4 as a starter, but he also had more turnovers than touchdowns, along with a lower completion percentage than Browning,” Chrysler wrote.

Plus, piling on their draft capital over Sanders, when they already have Mac Jones and Davis Mills, doesn’t seem likely.

“The Bucs also already have two young developmental quarterbacks they really like in Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels,” Chrysler notes.

Despite entering the league as undrafted free agents, both Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels have turned heads during offseason workouts. Their early performances have been impressive enough to force the coaching staff to reconsider the lower half of the quarterback depth chart.

Besides them, Bowles will also keep an eye on Browing for potentially making him the next face of their franchise.
