Adam Schefter truly believes the Dallas Cowboys have landed themselves one of the best picks from the 2026 NFL Draft.
Big improvements were needed in Arlington this offseason after the Cowboys ended last season with a dreadful 7-9-1 record.
Offense was not an issue for the Cowboys, with Dak Prescott enjoying one of his most productive seasons so far.
However, it was another story on defense, which is why a big focus has been placed on improving Brian Schottenheimer’s options on the defensive side of the ball.
Five of Dallas’ seven draft picks this year were defensive players, with the 11 overall pick, Caleb Downs, seriously impressing in training camp.

The safety out of Ohio State fell out of the top ten and into the hands of the Cowboys, who snapped up the opportunity to draft Downs.
There were some people who genuinely considered Downs as the best overall player in the 2026 draft.
Having been able to establish himself in the Cowboys’ training camp, Schefter shared what he has been hearing about the rookie.
“I want to direct your attention to the Dallas Cowboys and Caleb Downs,” he said.
“If you listen to the quotes coming out of there and what people are saying about him, they’re already looking at him as a game changer – somebody who is changing their defense and their culture. He has won at all levels of football, and they are already lining him up as their nickel cornerback, deploying him all over the field. He’s a rookie who plays and thinks like a veteran.
“Early on, it looks like the Dallas Cowboys hit the lottery on Caleb Downs, who slid right into their laps.”
Only two other teams – Washington Commanders (384) and Cincinnati Bengals (380) – allowed a higher average number of yards per game last season than the Cowboys (377).
There was no team in the NFL that conceded more points (511) than the Cowboys last season, either.
Huge improvements are going to be needed this time around if the Cowboys are going to make the playoffs, but players like Downs already seem to be providing that positive change on defense.
