The Milwaukee Brewers recovered from a pair of losses against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a commanding 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Memorial Day.

Milwaukee was able to receive contributions both offensively and defensively to get the win, so let's review them:

Miz Magic

To open the series against the Cardinals, the Brewers gave right-hander Jacob Misiorowski the starting nod and, once again, he remained hot throughout the day.

Misiorowski notched seven innings and struck out 12 batters while allowing just two hits, one earned run, and one walk. Through five innings, Misiorowski had struck out 10 batters and allowed no hits, and it was not until the sixth inning when the Cardinals finally broke through against him.

In the top of the sixth inning, Misiorowski allowed a pair of singles that resulted in a run for St. Louis, ending his no-hit and shutout bid. Misiorowski would get out of the inning and then return in the top of the seventh to strike out two of the Cardinals’ three batters.

Because of Misiorowski’s dominant and long outing, the Brewers only had to call on Aaron Ashby from the bullpen to finish the job.

Through five starts in May, Misiorowski has struck out 49 batters while only allowing 11 hits and six walks in 31 ⅓ total innings. The earned run he gave up on Monday was also his first of the month. On average, he has struck out nearly 10 batters per game through his five outings in May.

Help on Offense

While Misiorowski and Ashby were keeping the Cardinals in check, the Brewers’ offense was getting productive, mostly because of the middle of the batting order.

Christian Yelich, Andrew Vaughn, and Luis Rengifo made up the Brewers’ 4-6 slots in the batting order, and they combined for seven of the team’s 11 hits and three of its five RBIs. Vaughn led the way with three hits in four tries, Yelich had a team-high two RBIs, and Rengifo added two more hits and a drawn walk.

Beyond the middle of the order, the Brewers also received a nice contribution from William Contreras, who had a hit and an RBI in three at-bats, as well as Garrett Mitchell, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

With the win, the Brewers are now 31-20 and possess a 2 1/2-game lead over the Cardinals for first place in the National League Central Division. A win on Tuesday will secure the series victory against St. Louis, and Milwaukee will receive that opportunity at 6:40 p.m. CT.
