The Milwaukee Brewers dominated the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday in a 5-0 win to complete the sweep of their division rivals in statement-making fashion.
When the Brewers entered the series, they had a chance to reclaim first place in the National League Central Division, and they did that and more. So, how did they win easily on Wednesday?
While most of the attention regarding the Brewers’ pitching staff has been on Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison has also been putting up impressive outings.
On Wednesday, he had one of his best yet.
Harrison was in complete control through seven shutout innings of work in which he struck out 11 batters while only giving up two hits and one walk. The Cubs’ batting order simply did not have an answer for the 24-year-old lefty as he improved to 5-1 on the season.
After the Brewers failed to score in the top of the first inning, they followed up with a rather surprising second frame.
After the Brewers won a catcher’s interference challenge that resulted in Sal Frelick taking first base, Joey Ortiz walked to give Milwaukee another opportunity with two men on.
When David Hamilton stepped up to the plate, he delivered, thanks to some added help from Cubs’ center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
With a 2-0 count, Hamilton shot a single into center field that Armstrong attempted to collect, but it bounced past his glove and toward the warning track. The error easily scored Frelick and Ortiz, and Hamilton hustled around the bases and beat the throw home for an inside-the-park home run.
With Hamilton’s swing of the bat, heads up instincts and hustle, the Brewers immediately took a 3-0 lead.
Hamilton’s little-league homer would not mark the end of his night, though, as he later launched a triple to right field in the seventh inning. After a subsequent wild pitch, he scored again.
Overall, Hamilton went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Brewers’ sweep of the Cubs provided their path back to first place in the division, and created ramifications for Chicago.
The Cubs did not just fall one, but two spots in the NL Central. Now, the Brewers lead the pack, and the St. Louis Cardinals sit at No. 2, a game-and-a-half behind Milwaukee.
The Brewers will have Thursday off before hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers at home for a three-game series.
