The Indianapolis Colts capped off their 2025 NFL draft by selecting Hunter Wohler out of Wisconsin.
So what drew the Colts to Wohler at that stage of the draft? Versatility.
“With Hunter, the versatility was the key thing, especially later in the draft," said area scout Tyler Hughes via the Indy Star.
Wohler played safety at Wisconsin, but the Colts drafted him as a linebacker. However, his role with the team, from the sounds of it, will be multifaceted.
A two-year starter on defense, the bulk of Wohler's defensive snaps during that span came near the line of scrimmage, either in the box, as a slot defender, or blitzing off the edge.
Throughout his career, Wohler has been a reliable tackler, which in turn has helped make him a productive run defender. In coverage over the last two seasons, Wohler has allowed a completion rate of 64% at 10.1 yards per catch with nine pass breakups and two interceptions, per PFF.
Within Lou Anarumo's defensive scheme, Wohler could carve out a role as a dime linebacker during those more passing-heavy and obvious throwing situations.
“With how much sub-package we’re in, in the NFL nowadays, that dime linebacker role is nice for him, but that’s not going to limit him to play strong safety or free safety," Hughes said. "He has the frame to play all of them.”
Along with his potential contributions on defense, Wohler can make an instant impact on special teams. At Wisconsin, Wohler played almost 500 career snaps on teams and did so across five of the six different phases.
"He’s played a lot of down linebacker, he’s played strong safety, he’s played free safety, he was the punt returner this year, which shows that he’s a reliable dude and coaches trust him," Hughes added. "Super smart. He’s going to be a great special teams player for us."
Both linebacker and safety were positions where the Colts needed to bolster their depth heading into the NFL draft. The addition of Wohler and his versatility can provide a boost in that regard at each position. However, as an incoming rookie who was taken late in Day 3, the Colts also have to be mindful of not putting too much on his plate right away.
