The state of Indiana may soon be joining the likes of California, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland based on the intentions announced by the Chicago Bears on Friday afternoon.
They announced their intentions to relocate to Hammond, Indiana, after Illinois lawmakers failed to pass a bill to incentivize the team to stay in their state. It has been a yearslong battle between the Bears, Chicago and Illinois, one that included the NFL franchise buying land in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
In a statement shared Friday, the Bears indicated they had not yet selected a site for their new stadium. The board of directors voted Thursday night to approve moving forward with a site in Northwest Indiana, thus giving the state a second team alongside the Indianapolis Colts.
Here's a look at what this means for the Colts, Northwest Indiana and more.
"We believe a world-class stadium project in Hammond will transform the region, connecting Northwest Indiana to the South Side of Chicago through the Loop and across neighborhoods and suburbs stretching north of the city," the Bears said in a statement. "It will bring Chicagoland together and deliver new opportunities to its residents and businesses.”
"We look forward to building a partnership as strong as the '85 Bears defense, creating opportunities and economic growth that will benefit our state and the Bears organization for decades to come," Gov. Mike Braun said in a statement. "An NFL franchise in Northwest Indiana will be an economic boost to the entire region like we haven’t seen before."
