NEED TO KNOW
- A longtime Indiana Fever reporter says his credentials have been revoked by the team after they took issue with a social media report regarding Caitlin Clark's injury status
- The WNBA reprimanded the Indiana Fever for not being transparent about Clark's injury status prior to a May 20 game
- Scott Agness says the Fever claimed his report was "inaccurate" despite Clark later sitting out of that night's game
Longtime Indiana Fever beat writer Scott Agness says his press credentials have been revoked by the team after his reporting led to the WNBA reprimanding the Fever for not being transparent about Caitlin Clark’s health status.
The WNBA’s warning to the team came after a report Agness posted on social media prior to the Fever’s game on May 20, when he wrote about a hour-and-a-half before tip-off that a source told him the 24-year-old guard would sit out that night’s game as part of a “strategic management plan.”
Clark was then scratched from the lineup just before the game, which the WNBA star later said was her last-minute decision. Fever head coach Stephanie White told reporters after the game the WNBA star was dealing with “stiffness and soreness.”
According to league rules, a player’s availability must be shared by 5 p.m. the day before a game, unless it’s a back-to-back, PEOPLE reported at the time. ESPN reported the next day that the WNBA warned the Fever, saying the team could face consequences for not being transparent about Clark’s health.
Agness then claimed in a blog post on Tuesday, June 2, that his credentials were revoked by the team shortly after the game, citing his social media post as the reason.
“Indiana Fever public relations informed me via email that my credentialed access to all team events had been revoked,” Agness wrote in an update on his blog Tuesday. “They said it was due to ‘the spread of inaccurate and unsubstantiated information’ and cited my tweet about Caitlin Clark being ruled out 100 minutes before they defeated the Portland Fire on May 20.”
A representative for the Fever declined to comment when reached by PEOPLE on Wednesday.

Agness, a longtime Indiana Pacers and Fever reporter, formerly worked for The Athletic before starting his own blog in 2020. The outlet reported that Agness’ credentials for Pacers games had also been revoked by the team in 2024, which he claimed was because he parked in a media parking lot without proper clearance.
The basketball reporter told The Athletic this week that he’s been in contact with Fever public relations officials via email since his May 20 report but there appears to be “no movement” on his credentials being reinstated.

Agness acknowledged in an interview with The Athletic that he posted the social media report without contacting the Fever first to give the team a chance to confirm or deny the report, telling the outlet he “knew what they were going to say.”
“I felt, if anything, this was helping them out,” Agness said.
“If you go inside the quick story, the point of it was there is no new injury; she is healthy,” he said. “This is part of the bigger plan, the strategic management-type plan. The point in my mind was to emphasize to fans she’s good, no worries. This is just part of the recovery process after everything she’s been through last year.”

Clark missed the majority of the 2025 season with a groin injury after winning the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year Award in 2024 and being named to the All-WNBA First Team in her rookie campaign.
The Iowa graduate has played in seven of the Fever’s eight games so far this season.
