Basic training, November 1972. We weren't allowed any personal effects but one guy snuck in a tape player and two new tapes, Billy Paul and another by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Most of the trainees in our company were New York Puerto Ricans that had been shipped to Fort Ord because of race issues back East and they didn't get along with anyone that wasn't like them. So the rest of us, which was 8 young black men and me, gathered together and listened to If You Don't Know Me By Now and Me and Mrs Jones over and over every night for a couple of months. Brings back strong and mostly pleasant memories every time I hear either song.
