It’s a great song and I wish that the dictator of Equatorial Guinea, Francisco Nguema, didn’t taint it

ta admit, I have heard the melody before but never really listened to the song... in honesty it doesnt sound like American music...has a sound of France or Morocco about it.... so I may have associated it with New Guinea easily if thats the context in which I heard it.

I believe it was originally a Russian song and someone in the US translated it to English.

This is what I was referring to:
It refers to a gruesome event during the brutal dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema in the 1970s. The song "Those Were the Days," originally by Mary Hopkin, was played over loudspeakers in a football stadium in 1969 as the president's political opponents were executed.
