Per NFL rules, the Green Bay Packers are allowed to host up to 30 draft-eligible players (excluding “local” prospects, such as those in the UW system or nearby regional schools such as Northern Illinois) for in-person visits. The Journal Sentinel is tracking the visits and supplying profiles based on information from sources and published reports.
GREEN BAY – Illinois guard Josh Gesky didn’t get invited to the NFL scouting combine, but it hasn’t hurt his draft prospects.
Gesky made the most of his pro day in Champaign and has drawn a lot of interest from NFL teams, including the Green Bay Packers, who will host him on a top-30 draft visit this month.
The 6-foot-5, 329-pound Gesky took his combine snub and ran with it. In preparation for his pro day, he lost 20 pounds and showed he had been working intensely to highlight his athleticism.
Mostly a left guard at Illinois, Gesky posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.94 to 5.0 seconds that would have ranked in the top 10 among offensive linemen and a vertical leap of 33 inches that would have ranked fifth. His arms are 33 inches long and his hands measure 10 inches.
His athleticism opened a lot of eyes and Gesky is garnering a lot of invitations to visit before the draft. In Green Bay’s offense, he would be a guard with the potential to play center given his strength and mobility.
The Packers need backup linemen after losing left tackle Rasheed Walker in free agency and releasing center Elgton Jenkins. They re-signed Sean Rhyan and plan to play him at center, but they don’t have a surefire backup there and could use help at guard as well.
Gesky told 247sports that he has been training with former Illini and NFL lineman Tony Pashos for four years and it’s part of the reason he went from a 260-pound recruit to an honorable-mention all-Big Ten selection, starting 26 games over the past two seasons. He said he wanted to show teams that he was capable of playing more than one position and at whatever weight they wanted him to play.
“I wanted to obviously show how fast I am here, so I’m a little bit lighter now. I'm able to move,” Gesky 247Sports after his pro day. “I’m able to show I can play at 308, I’m able to play at 330. Whatever teams need me at, I’m going to be able to go out there and show them I can do it. I thought today was a great opportunity to show them that.
“I felt really good about the numbers I put up. I worked a lot of long hours, a lot of people to thank for it, a lot of work went into it. All my speed coaches, all my strength coaches, very grateful for all the work they put in.”
