If we draft Fitzgerald: How will Anquan feel being the 3rd highest paid reciever.

I could see this getting really ugly for two reasons:

1. The Cardinals realize they have a special player and they re-up Boldin's contract and give him say a 7-8 million dollar bonus. That would be the best thing to do but even that could get ugly considering that you now have signing bonuses in the range of 20-25 million dollars for 3 2nd year recievers (Fitz-10+ signing bonus, Boldin-7-8 million, and Johnson-5 million). Sounds a heck of alot like 1998 and our desert storm defensive line.

or

2. Even worse, play hardball with Boldin and make him play out the remaining 3 years on his contract paying him 2nd round value and making him the 3rd highest played reciever on our team when he could be one of the 5 best recievers in the league.

This is really where I hope Rod Graves still has a big say in things. Graves seems pretty grounded on financial issues and hopefully he can temper Green's enthusiasm for Fitzgerald. Fitz is a wonderful player but we would be putting a ton of money into one position which can be extremely dangerous considering only one guy (Boldin) has done anything in the league to speak of.

They can't redo his contract until some time in august. They should make it very clear to Quan they intend to rework the deal, and then do it when and when it makes sense for the franchise. I don't see why it matters whether you have all that bonus money in 3 younr WR's or 2 young Wr's and a QB, or 2 young WR's and a safety. the slot is going to be the same, the Cards say we don't pay QB premiums so if we pick at 3, the deal is basically going to be the same for Ben, Fitz or Taylor or whoever.

IMHO, the Cards will take no initiatives to rework Boldin's contract until well into next season......they paid dearly by reworking Plummer's contract too early before they really knew what they had.....they will not make this mistake with Boldin.

Boldin has his head screwed on just right. He will not pout or make any waves. He knows that the contract negotiations will happen.

Cheez!

We have so many other things to worry about (like how are we going to rush the passer? how are we going to defend against the pass? and whether we should pass up greater need in order to not pass up a franchise QB in the draft).

Who has time to worry about speculative situations in which Cardinal player "might" get PMS over "some" issue? If we're to get this thing turned around, we have to keep the focus on how well we play football and not all this side stuff.

Well these guys did sign contracts, I don't see why they must all be redone every time they play better their original contract. I say at least let them play out the first couple of years, and THEN look into reopening the discussion. One of the perks of picking well in the later rounds should be cap friendly contracts for the first few years.

Denver has left Portis hang now for a pair of seasons, and I think it was the right thing to do. Let em do it twice, and then hook em em up.

Nail on the head Russ. I remember I think it was Michael Bidwill talking on one of the local news programs about how the Cardinals want to pay Anquan what he's worth, but they can't change his rookie contract until August of this year. Watch, right before the season starts, Quan will have a brand new, 5 season, $ 40 million deal.

He's worth it.

Yes he is and I'm sure he will get it.

Of all the players I've met the Q would be the last I would expect to get in a knot over this in the short term.

He is, but it won't happen this year.

It's pretty much standard in the league to redo draft steals after their 2nd season. If Quan continues to produce he'll get a new contract next off-season.

I agree. He might be a bit miffed but it would be internal I believe he wouldn't let it effect his play. Non-issue and as Jeff G suggests, there are about 5,000 things more important to this teams success than who might be upset by other contracts on the team.

Agreed. Because of this I would like to see the team wait until mid year to make sure he is not a flash in the pan. I DON'T THINK HE IS A FLASH IN THE PAN. I just think there are more pressing needs right now.

Can you give me some examples? Not doubting you I just don't think it has happened very often to the extent it did with Quan. Portis last year, but Denver redid Terell Davis earlier than Portis so it wasn't standard for them they didn't have the cap room to do it for Portis last year.

Quan doesn't strike me as the type who's going to be disruptive but the team can really help their image among NFL players if they take care of his contract. Otherwise players are going to say "they have more caproom than anybody else, and they're hardballing their best player?"

I believe I heard that MB said they would look at it in August =IMO there will be negotations going on with Quan , his agent and the Cards befor the start of the season. Then will people say, OVER PAID, Should have waited, and worse if we draft or sign a WR who takes some cathces away from q and he ends up with only 1100 yards or less what then?

I think that they should wait until after this coming season. If the Q can do it 2 years in a row he will deserve a new contract. Last year could be a fluke.

Az240z

So can you name me other WR's who had similar success as rookies and then turned out to be flukes?

Quan broke rookie records last year, he wasnt' the first rookie to be on a bad team so it wasn't just padding stats in losses either. If he stays healthy there's just no reason to assume he was a fluke, the whole league knew about him early, they were absolutely aware of where he was all the time on the field.

There just isn't a whole lot of precedent for a guy setting that many records as a rookie and being a fluke.

Suppose Quan goes out this year and catches 90+ 1200+ yards and 10 Td's, what do you think it'll cost us to renegotiate then?

About the only concern I would have is can Bidwill come up with the cash to pay QUan a big bonus ,and whoever our #1 pick is. One would think the owner of an NFL team could get creative about getting a loan to get access to cash if he needs it?

I had to brag a little.

Its funny how the Boldin/Fitzgerald contract issue has become such a hot topic now. Not to brag, but I brought this up 10 months ago, 2 months before the draft and got put in my place for worrying about such a trivial thing.

Well it sure looks like an issue now.

Yeah I remember the thread. There were several. In terms of "too much money on WR's" I never understood that thinking, the concern was always if we draft a WR, we are actually INCREASING what Quan will ask for because the rookie would make so much more than Quan. I'm pretty sure that's true even after the injury, if we'd taken Ben or Taylor, Quan wouldn't be able to use THEIR contracts "against us" because they don't play the same position.

The big difference now is then Rosenhaus wasn't his agent.

You nailed it though.
