FOXBOROUGH — If Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter falls to No. 4 overall, New England’s first round choice could be very simple.
Take the bluechip prospect.
The Penn State edge rusher and Heisman winner from Colorado are the consensus top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, so if two quarterbacks go at the top of the draft and one of them falls into Mike Vrabel’s lap, the decision is an easy one.
But what if Carter and Hunter are both gone by the fourth overall pick? Do the Patriots know what they’d do in that scenario?
In a pre-draft press conference at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Vrabel said they don’t yet.
“We’re in the process of going through what everybody calls these simulations,” Vrabel said. “That’s been — and will continue to be — good exercises. It’s just running scenarios and what we would do based on those scenarios. To say that we have a definitive answer on those scenarios? No. But those are processes that are ongoing and will be done here shortly.”
If Campbell and Hunter are gone, the Patriots may opt for polarizing tackle Will Campbell, who has strong tape from LSU but very short arm length for an NFL tackle. At this stage, Vrabel said he doesn’t have a great idea of how the Top 3 will play out in front of them.
“I think that we probably know as much as everybody else and what gets reported. Tennessee is not calling. Cleveland is not calling even though I was consultant there last year, I haven’t heard their plans on who they want to pick,” Vrabel joked. “So we’ll see as we get closer, if any of that information is available we’d love to have it.”
