The days of the San Francisco 49ers building a super team around a young, cost-controlled quarterback on a rookie deal are over.

San Francisco got three seasons, 23 wins, two NFC Championship Game appearances, and one Super Bowl appearance out of Brock Purdy while making less than $1.1 million per season, and now the team is negotiating a deal that will make the Iowa State alum one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL.

It’s the fifth straight offseason the 49ers are having to negotiate a long-term contract extension for one of their biggest stars (Fred Warner 2021, Deebo Samuel 2022, Nick Bosa 2023, Brandon Aiyuk 2024), and while each of those previous deals were costly, Purdy’s new deal with be the most expensive given his position.

Though talks are still fluid, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed some intriguing details about where things stand between Purdy and the 49ers during an appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show” on Thursday.

“I don’t want to say that they’re close, but they’re at least at a close enough point where you say, like, alright, I could see a deal getting done at some point,” Rapoport stated. “So, he shows up — when a quarterback holds out, it’s like a whole different thing, so it’s just easier for all of us when he shows up. I do think that was the right move, and I do believe a deal will get done.

“I think he’ll be a $50-million quarterback. We’ll see if they get to mid-50s. You never know, because you never know what a deal looks like, but I would be surprised [if he got $60 million per year like Dak Prescott].”

Ian Rapoport was asked if he thinks Brock Purdy’s new contract will be at least $60M a year:

“I would be surprised.”

If Purdy’s final contract comes in between $50 million and $55 million per year, it would be a significant raise from the 49ers’ reported initial contract offer of $45 million per year.

Prescott’s $60 million-per-year salary is the highest in the NFL.

Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, Green Bay’s Jordan Love, and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence are the only other passers making $55 million per year or more. Purdy could potentially become the fifth QB to make at least $55 million per year.

Purdy’s projected market value is $59.7 million per year, according to Spotrac, which predicts he’ll sign a four-year, $238.9 million extension.
