Ian Jackson commits to St. John's basketball: Stats, 247 rating, more for UNC transfer

Ian Jackson is heading home and will get to play under an elite college basketball coach to boot.

According to a report from On3 Sports, Jackson signed with Rick Pitino and St. John's basketball on Monday. Jackson will be a sophomore during the 2025-26 season and will have three years of eligibility left with the Red Storm.

Jackson started in 12 of his 36 games with North Carolina this season, averaging 11.9 points 2.7 rebounds and 0.9 assists on 45.6% shooting and 39.5% from 3-point range. However, the Tar Heels struggled during the regular season and Jackson did not live up to his five-star billing.

The addition of Jackson gives Pitino and St. John's the No. 2 transfer portal class, trailing only Michigan, according to 247 Sports Composite Rankings.

  • 2024-25: 11.9 points on 45.6% shooting, 2.7 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.6 steals per game in 36 games (12 starts)

  • National ranking: No. 8 overall
  • Positional ranking: No. 4 shooting guard
  • State ranking: No. 2 player from New York

As a transfer:

  • Star rating: Five stars
  • Overall ranking: No. 8 overall
  • Positional ranking: No. 1 shooting guard

Coming out of Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx, New York, Jackson was rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports’ Composite rankings. He was the No. 8 overall prospect in the 2024 class, the No. 4 shooting guard and the No. 2 player from New York behind Baylor's VJ Edgecombe.

As a transfer, Jackson was similarly the No. 8 player in the portal rankings. He was, however, the No. 1 overall shooting guard in the portal this cycle.

St. John's basketball transfer additions​


Along with Jackson, Pitino has also added Bryce Hopkins (17 points per game at Providence), Joson Sanon (11.9 PPG at Arizona State) and Oziyah Sellers (13.7 PPG at Stanford) to the team from the transfer portal. All four, along with returning starter and first-team All-Big East star Zuby Ejiofor, are expected to comprise the starting lineup for the Red Storm.
